Our church is doing a study through the book of Job right now. If you're interested you can go to our podcasts and listen in. One of the quotes I've stumbled upon in my studies is this quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer written in his prayer journal on Jan 23, 1944 just days before he was killed for his faith in Christ by the Nazis. He wrote:“To renounce a full life and its real joys in order to avoid pain is neither Christian nor human”Sadly I think so much of the American dream is all about avoiding pain. I mean how much money does Advil, Tylenol and all those companies make each year keeping pain away from Americans? A full life filled with real joy includes everything Jesus faced as He walked through this broken world; death as well as life, sadness as well as happiness, sorrow as well as joy, pain as well as pleasure. Avoiding pain is not the goal of life. Living a life that can stand up to anything, including pain, is what it's all about. What do you think?
