I just got back from a great weekend of speaking at "Man Camp." Man Camp is a men's retreat led by Twin Lakes Church, the church that helped plant the church I lead. Each time the men gathered for worship this past weekend, and opened their bibles to hear a message from God's word, one man got up and told his story with brutal honesty. Wow! You wouldn't believe the stuff these guys were admitting up in front of well over 100 other men. One man told a story about how he spent his whole life trying to cover up sexual abuse every night at bedtime from the age of 5 until his early teens. He told his story and talked about how God can in fact heal a very broken past. Another guy got up and told his story that he had a sex addiction going all the way back into his teenage years. He talked about how this addiction crushed his marriage, shattered his family, and ultimately destroyed him. Then he told everyone about the healing power of God's grace. What was so cool to me was the fact that their courage immediately changed the atmosphere among the men. Most of the time men are used to faking it until they make it. However, the instant these men shared their painful, vulnerable and dark stories was the instant everyone else started talking honestly about their stories and seeking help so that they too could be set free by God's grace. Like God's word says in James 5:16 "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." Maybe today is a good day for you to go to a safe person and experience the healing power of telling the brutal truth of your entire story.
