I'm not a big conspiracy theorist when it comes to church and state, but this latest news is quite sobering. According to the Sept. 8, 2014 Christianity Today article, the Cal State University system has told InterVarsity Christian Fellowship:That “no exemption can be made” to a new non-discrimination policy that requires leadership positions be open to all students . . . “attesting that the organization has no rules or policies that discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, color, age, gender, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation, or disability" . . . Now 23 student chapters are no longer recognized by their universities as official student groups, losing free access to rooms for meetings and student activities fairs for recruiting. This is the beginning of ushering Jesus completely out of the conversation in America's largest university system. Alec Hill, director of InterVarsity, observed the deep irony that entire Greek systems at these same universities are all allowed to discriminate on the basis of gender and/or intelligence. “It’s as if the First Amendment now protects Greeks but not religious folks, which is Alice in Wonderland stuff,” he said. “It really is peculiar.” In fact, a prominent NYT article agreed, along with the The Denver Post and even the no-fan-of-religion Mother Jones’s Kevin Drum. This is clearly the direction and course of our culture. Will we who believe remain blissfully preoccupied with consuming more stuff behind our white picket fences, or will we be courageously committed to see God's "kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven?"
