At an ungodly hour this morning I got up with my wife to see her off for the next two days. For the next two days she will enjoy continuing education in her profession, and I will be a single dad at home with three busy kids. Days like these remind me to give a shout out to all single parents for the difficulties they face every day. Anyway, it wasn't an easy 10 year journey supporting Aleta as she worked diligently through grad school, thousands of hours of supervised work, and then written and oral exams to finally receive her California MFT license. But even though it wasn't easy, it was a privilege. As Aleta pulled out of our garage and drove into our morning rain (Thanks for rain God!) I found myself celebrating who she has become, and who God is making her to be. I also celebrated that I got to be a part of that important process. What came to my mind were the words of Paul in Romans 12:10 "Be devoted to one another . . . give preference to one another in honor." It makes me realize all over again that marriage isn't about helping each other be happy - although that does happen. Marriage is actually about helping each other grow up into God's vision of the best version of themselves. I have to say - God's doing a great job, and He's allowing me to participate in that job, of helping Aleta grow up into His vision of the best version of her. I can also say, she has made great sacrifices joining with God in helping me grow up into His vision for my own life. It's a beautiful thing when two people live to see the vision of the others best self come to life!
