“Unless” is the word we use when we don’t understand something, don’t have enough evidence, or we’re afraid to trust a person or thing. When we don’t understand something we say, “Unless you draw me a diagram, I won’t understand what you’re trying to tell me.” When we don’t have enough evidence, we say “Unless I get more evidence, I will remain unconvinced.” When we’re afraid to trust someone we say, “Unless you prove to me that you can be trusted, I will have a hard time trusting you.” Every one of us hold on to an “unless” or two when it comes to God.
